Summary: A girl is sent to stay with a family for the summer and ends up falling for the son. However, his parents disapprove. A short story based on a dream I had.

A Hard Choice

The sound of footsteps echoed off of the hardwood floors throughout the nearby rooms. As she heard the movement her heart started to beat rapidly. Quickly she pressed her body against the wall nearby hoping he wouldn’t come in searching for her. After turning her head towards the opening of the room she closed her eyes tightly for a brief second. Peering around through the open doorway, she saw him heading in her direction. She knew that he had already seen her. Moving her head out of his way, she jumped back into the shadows.

“Here. I got you something.” He said, throwing a bag of fast food onto the bed behind her. His eyes narrowed down at her in disappointment and he let out a heavy sigh. “I could see you in the mirror the whole time, you know.”

Quickly she turned her head to the opposite side of the room where she was standing. There across from her hung the elegant golden framed mirror housing her reflection staring back at her. Having forgotten about the mirror that resided on the wall, she winced, quickly looking away in embarrassment from both the boy beside her and the tattling mirror. Unable to look at him, she apologized quietly. “Sorry.”

“Things went so great the other day!” He exclaimed. A look of confusion spread across his handsome features as he gazed intently at her. A hand reached up to brush the loose strands of dark hair that had fallen from in front of his eyes back onto his head. “So what happened? I’ve been wanting to ask you on a real date, but lately you’ve been acting…” Even though he didn’t finish his sentence she knew what he was attempting to say.

Everything had been going well at first. When her parents had sent her off to live with these strange people there were so many emotions racing through her mind. She felt unloved, hurt, and angry. It was only a temporary situation for a few months during the summer vacation until her parents were more financially stable, but she still couldn’t grasp any of it. She couldn’t understand what kind of people could tell someone, ‘We’ll take your kid until you get back on your feet!’ Let alone any parents who would actually take them up on that offer!

The Michaels’ weren’t what she considered a normal family, which was probably the reason they got along with her parents so well. Amara knew nothing of the family she was going to stay with except that they were old high school friends of her parents that had continued to keep in touch with over the years. And the fact they were ‘stinkin’ rich’.

When she first arrived she met the young twins, Carrie and Evan Michaels. They were two ten year olds, only 5 years younger than herself, who were ‘excited to get an older sister this summer’. The guest room she had received was a significant amount larger than her bedroom at home and much fancier. The walls were painted in an off white color with golden trim at the ceiling and near the hardwood floors. A dark hand sewn rug lay on the floor underneath the bed which was also consisted of a golden headboard. Even now she continued to have trouble sleeping in such an extravagant room. It wasn’t until her second day she met him.

The eldest son of Tori and Ethan Michaels was named Tan. The first impression the older 18 year old left on Amara wasn’t a good one he was constantly on a date with one of his many women or out drinking with his friends with his fake ID. For the longest time they bumped heads with his ‘know it all attitude’ and her ‘goody-two-shoeness’. It wasn’t until the month of June was halfway over her opinion of him started to change. She had planned a trip to the mall with Carrie and Evan and he nonchalantly volunteered to cancel a date with a girl he had been trying to get with for the longest time.

And her feelings for him grew each day afterwards.

However, everyone, with the exception of herself, had noticed the attention she was receiving from him. They became concerned. A special breakfast with the parents of the Michaels household at the time left Amara confused when they told her she wasn’t allowed to date Tan. They told her to leave their son alone or they would send her back home. At the time she hated the boy and had no understanding of what they had meant. Now whenever she passed him in the hallways or he sat across from her at the dinner table, his parents words were all she could think about. Not wanting to be a burden to her own parents she decided that she would avoid him.

Now, though her head was tilted down towards her shoes, she could still feel his gaze burning her. Moving her head only slightly her eyes moved the rest of the way to meet his. His dark brown, almost black, eyes held the expression of hurt and sadness. “What did I do?” The tone in his voice sounded as if he were begging her. The look on his face was of genuine worry that he may lose her.

“Don’t do that, please. Please, don’t do that.” She pleaded. Taking a seat on the bed, she rested her head in her hands. He sat down beside her and stared at the side of her face. “Ok, well, I don’t get it. I’ve done a total 360 for you!”

Unable to help herself she started laughing. Even when she was feeling low he could put a smile on her face, even if it was unintentional. “That’s a circle, dummy.” She smiled and punched him playfully on the arm.

A grin swept across his face as he moved in to tickle her. “You’re gonna be in so much trouble for that one.” He laughed.

“No!” She squealed. She guarded herself and prepared before he even touched her. Before she knew what was happening, he pulled her close to him into a kiss.

Her eyes were wide in shock as their lips were pressed against each other. Time seemed to stop and although the thought crossed her mind that she should stop, she didn’t want to. His lips felt so warm and she felt safe being held in his arms. She watched as his eyes were closed and wondered if she should be following his example. What was she supposed to do? She had never kissed anyone before! After a moment she felt his lips began to part. Rapidly blinking in surprise, she suddenly shoved him backwards onto the bed.

“Sorry, sorry. I shouldn’t have done that!” He said quickly, slapping his head with the palm of his hand. “I knew you weren’t ready for that. I‘m sorry.” He continued to apologize facing the ceiling.

Amara said nothing for a moment while everything absorbed into her head. “It’s ok.” She said finally. A small soft innocent smile crossed her features. Turning her head she looked down at him laying beside her and smiled. “I kinda liked it.” As she made the confession a blush swept across her cheeks.

He smirked sitting up and moving closer to her. “Wanna try again?”

She shook her head. “They told me to leave you alone a long time ago.” She sighed quietly.

A look of confusion crossed his face. “Who?”

“Your parents.” She replied.

Tan laughed. “You’re not really gonna listen to them, though.“ He grinned putting an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close against his chest. She wrapped her arms around his waist and said nothing. When he received no response, he blinked blankly a few times in disbelief and looked down at her. “Are you?”

She had no idea what she was going to do now.
