Summary: Written for the prompt over at Simply Snickers (link can be found at the side under ‘Writing Prompts’): the painting Le Dejeuner des Canotiers by Pierre-Auguste Renoir with the keywords secret and silent. My first time at attempting a prompt.

Secret Inhibitions

The crystal glasses filled with Madeira wine clatter against each other creating a beautiful melodic sound. While the women bring the glass briefly touching their lips before erupting in an obnoxious cackle, the men slap their knees heaving with boisterous laughter. Everyone is happily engrossed in their chattering. Everyone with the exception of me.

As I lean against the handrail underneath the canopy, I pretend to listen to a man in from of me who has the assumption he has somehow weaseled his way to be a successful candidate for my prospected mate. I only smile at the ludicrous thought which only feeds into his delusions.

Many years of practice has made it to where no one notices my displeasure. It’s my own secret inhibitions that I’m not fond of these, or any other, people. All I can do is force a smile, pretend I’m interested, and keep my true emotions silent.

“What a fabulous time we’re having!” My sister laughs from the table a short ways from me. She is preoccupied flirting with a man hovering over her.

Inside my mind screams for help begging to be saved from the pieces of pathetic gossiping grazing by my ears. I want to hop over the railing of the boat and swim my way back to land. It takes all my strength not to snap at the guests telling them of how idiotic they all are. I have the mind to notify my sister and the people she has misinformed, ‘No, you are mistaken. I am having an absolutely horrid time.’

“Oh, what a fabulous time, indeed!” I lie with a friendly smile, keeping my secret inhibitions silent.

Your stories are very good. I’m going to add your site to my blog roll so I’ll remember to check more often. Good luck with your writing.
