Summary:  Written for Simply Snickers prompt using keywords wait and wonder.  Have you ever just waited for something that wasn’t gonna happen? Short story. (Updated on July 11 for waaay too many errors for my comfort though probably still a ton.)

Waiting

It astonishes the folk of the small town how she isn’t bothered about the lies people spread, but instead how she continues to sit in silence and wait no matter what the circumstance. Her determination had made her the subject of gossip and rumors in town as well as pitied by most of its residents. No one dares to mention the truth afraid that it would kill the fragile girl.

He has been back for some time now, but forgotten the promise he made to the young blind woman he once loved. During his years of absence he has started a family along with a new life, although he hasn’t forgotten about her.

Whenever he sees someone in town with knowledge on her being he asks, “How does the maiden fare?”

They all reply the same, “She waits.” Then he, like the rest of the town, fills with pity. The thought to visit her doesn’t occur as he has convinced himself long ago too much time has passed for him to see her again. He tells himself he’s supposed to be preoccupied with his new life to worry about people in his past no matter how troubling it is for him to hear of her plight. He can’t help but wonder what she continues to wait for so patiently and diligently…

Everyday she waits at the foot of the field resting in wheat higher than her own body. Even though she can‘t see what‘s around her she knows what she‘s looking for. The words he had used to comfort her continue to echo loudly through her ears reminding her, “Don‘t worry. I‘ll be back for you.” She hasn’t realized how much time has passed.

How sad!

Very well written story. It certainly pulled on my heart strings.

A very sensitive narrative!

I think I rather have the girl know the truth or perhaps she knew but still decide to wait for him anyway.

have you read “Waiting by Ha Jin”? this reminds of the book where this woman waits years for this guy to divorce his wife so that they can marry.
